South Korea confirms location for THAAD deployment
South Korea has announced a joint decision to deploy THAAD in a central region of the country, but the measure was met with opposition. South Korean Deputy Defense Minister Ryu Je-seung told reporters on Wednesday placing the U.S. anti-missile defense system in Seongju, in central North Gyeongsang Province would "maximize the military utility of THAAD, while guaranteeing the safety of residents," Yonhap reported.
Can THAAD Batteries Protect Seoul?
If the U.S. Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense missile batteries are deployed in the southern part of South Korea, as sources say, they would not protect Seoul and the metropolitan area from North Korean missile attacks. The Defense Ministry claims that the purpose of the THAAD batteries would be to protect not only U.S. troops and equipment but South Koreans from a North Korean missile attack.
S.Korea, U.S. decide to deploy THAAD despite opposition from neighbors
South Korea and the United States on Friday announced their final decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense in the U.S. Forces Korea despite continued oppositions from neighboring countries. The military authorities jointly made an official announcement to deploy the advanced U.S. missile defense system in the USFK stationed on the Korean peninsula to tackle the Democratic People's Republic of Korea 's nuclear and missile threats.
IS targets U.S. military installations here, S. Korean citizens
The Islamic State jihadist group has designated U.S. Air Force installations here and South Korean citizens as targets for attacks, Seoul's state spy agency said Sunday. In a press release, the National Intelligence Service said that the group incited terrorist attacks against them through Telegram, a messaging service, and revealed location data of 77 Air Force installations of the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and of individuals in 21 countries.
